Question: What are the eligibility requirements to sit for the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) exam?

Answer: To be eligible for the CIA program and exam, candidates must meet specific educational and/or work experience requirements, along with providing proof of identity and education.

Educational and Work Experience Pathways:

Candidates can qualify through one of the following paths:

  • 1. Four-Year Post-Secondary Degree:
    • A 4-year post-secondary degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
  • 2. Final Year Students:
    • Full-time students in their final year of a 4-year post-secondary degree program may enter the CIA Program and take the CIA Exam parts.
    • Specific Requirements for Final Year Students:
      • A Character Reference Form completed and signed by an active IIA-certified individual.
      • Completion of a Special Student/Professor application in the IIA's Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS).
      • Submission of a University Student/Professor Registration form.
      • Completion of the Education Requirement (i.e., graduating and submitting proof of degree) within a specified timeframe after passing the exam.
  • 3. Two-Year Post-Secondary Education with Experience:
    • A 2-year post-secondary education (e.g., associate's degree or equivalent) AND 5 years of verified work experience in internal auditing or equivalent.
  • 4. Seven Years of Work Experience:
    • 7 years of verified work experience in internal auditing or equivalent (without a specific educational degree requirement).

  • Proof of Identification: A copy of the candidate’s official passport or national ID.
  • Proof of Education: A copy of the candidate’s degree or official transcripts that verify the educational requirement is met.
