Enrolled Agent (EA) Eligibility Requirements
Question: What are the
eligibility requirements to become an Enrolled Agent (EA)?
Answer: Unlike some other
professional certifications, there are no specific prior educational
qualifications required to pursue the Enrolled Agent (EA) designation. A
graduate with basic accounting knowledge can apply. However, applicants must
demonstrate competency in tax-related content.
This competency can be proven in
one of two ways:
1. Clear the Special
Enrollment Examination (SEE - EA Exam):
This is the most common path to
becoming an Enrolled Agent.
Requirement:
To earn the EA certification, a candidate must obtain a Preparer Tax
Identification Number (PTIN) and achieve passing scores on all three
parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE).
Exam
Parts: The SEE consists of three parts:
Content:
The exam covers a significant area of the Internal Revenue Code.
Exam
Order: There is no definite order to attempt the exam parts.
Candidates have the liberty to take any section first. The only necessity
is to clear all three sections.
2. IRS Experience:
Certain individuals with specific
work experience at the IRS may be exempt from the SEE exam.
Requirement:
Candidates must have worked at the IRS for five consecutive years
in a position that regularly involves applying and interpreting the
provisions of the Internal Revenue Code and the regulations related to
income, estate, gift, employment, or excise taxes.
