Who Needs a PTIN?

Tax Preparers: Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax
returns for compensation must have a valid PTIN before preparing those
returns.
Enrolled
Agents (EAs): All Enrolled Agents are also required to have a valid
PTIN.
SEE
Exam Candidates: It is mandatory to apply for and obtain a PTIN
in order to register for and take the Special Enrollment Examination
